Three-decades after the development of the first fat ski that changed the industry, Atomic and Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing (MWHS), bring together a special Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Atomic Backland 107 and 117 ski.

In 1988, Mike traveled to Austria to visit Atomic Ski Developer Rupert Huber to order ski's and bindings for the heli-ski season. During this meeting, Mike and Rupert agreed that skis needed to be designed to offer more fun in powder snow and what was developed from this meeting was the world’s first fat ski – the Atomic Powder Plus.

“We had an idea to make a ski, that performed like snowboards in the powder,” explained Rupert Huber, for the film Call Me Crazy – The Legend of Mike Wiegele.

According to Atomic today, the brand continues to refine the powder ski design to provide a better skiing experience- with their focus being on a light weight ski construction paired with performance.

The Atomic Backland 107 and 117, is a hybrid powder-charging backcountry ski and MWHS is proud to have this ski available for purchase this season, to commemorate the 50th anniversary year.

“Thank you Atomic for giving us the chance to be a part of the development of the powder ski – 30 years ago,” said Mike Wiegele. “When we developed the ski in the late 80’s, it changed the whole industry and helped make skiing a whole lot more fun.”
