Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing is located in Blue River, BC, in the heart of the massive Cariboo and Monashee mountain ranges, where the warm air from the west meets the cold, dry air from the north and creates more than 10 metres of perfect powder each winter. With more than 1,200,000 acres of ski terrain and over 1,000 peaks, guests can enjoy the majesty of the high alpine glaciers as well as the forested valley glades.
At over 95% we boast the best fly record in the business. However sometimes extreme snow conditions or adverse flying weather restricts our ability to fly safely.
With more than 1,200,000 acres to choose from we find exciting powder terrain for all boarders and skier's interests and abilities.
Each day guides use field observations, snow pit data and remote weather station data to analyze snow stability. Then, in conjunction with the pilots, the guides consider flying conditions, the group's abilities, visibility and snow conditions to determine the day's best terrain options.
When the snow stability is good there are many choices of where to ski. If the rating is fair or poor we ski more moderate slopes that are less exposed to potential avalanches.
Your guide will select a skiing route that suits your ability and comfort level, and offers just the right amount of challenge. Depending on conditions, we often start with an open, moderate glacier run, or a gentler run through the trees. As the week progresses, and your confidence increases we progress according to the group's abilities.
Guests who are expert skiers or boarders have the opportunity to challenge themselves with the world's best powder terrain. Please note that steeper slopes require additional caution and guides may take additional time to evaluate snow stability before skiing a run.
For many, high alpine glaciers provide the most exhilarating skiing/boarding experience of all - the freedom of carving 300, 500 or even 600 powder turns down a glacier surrounded by majestic snow covered peaks. When conditions allow, glacier skiing is suitable for all skill levels.
For many skiers and boarders, the trees are the ultimate experience, simply because of the conditions and terrain. The very highest quality of snow is found in the trees as the loose powder is protected from wind and sun. We spend a great deal of our skiing time within the forest, glades and open spaces below the treeline using the buddy system to increase safety.
